My Professional Journey

Building a Culture of Wellness

Role of Social Workers in Schools

Social Workers provide: Individual Counseling, Group Counseling, Classroom Push-in, SEL Workshops, Conflict Resolution/Mediation, and Empowering Student Leaders.

Universal Prevention

Social workers help create a supportive school environment for all students through school-wide programs, preventive education, and community-building initiatives that promote mental health awareness and emotional wellness.

Targeted Interventions

At this level, social workers deliver focused support through small group counseling, targeted skill-building programs, and specific interventions for students showing early warning signs or moderate needs.

Intensive Support

Social workers provide individualized, intensive interventions for students experiencing severe or chronic challenges, including crisis intervention, one-on-one counseling, and coordinated care with outside providers.

Katie Madges - School Social Worker

Mission & Vision

I am dedicated to transforming our school's approach to mental health through accessible support systems and student empowerment, fostering a culture of wellness that meets our community where they are.

Voices from BSMT

Student A.F.

"No words can describe how grateful I am for being there for me almost every Wednesday. . . Every day I walk into school with an unmotivated face and honestly you always put a smile on my face and just make me so motivated to go to school every day."

Student O.H.

"You really helped me talk to myself and realize a lot of things I never knew could negatively impact me. But truly Ms. Katie keep being your kind self and always a caring person. Ms. Katie I will remember you as the first counselor I could open up and talk about issues with school, friends, and past relationships."

Staff Yuko U.

"I have met and worked with numerous social workers in the past twenty years in the fields of restorative
justice and conflict resolution and Katie stands out as one of the best. . . It is an understatement to say that she has had a tremendous impact—Katie has been a gift to
BSMT and has transformed our school community."

Impact

Student Impact

Through individual support, group counseling, and leadership opportunities, I've empowered students to take charge of their mental health while creating pathways for them to support their peers and transform school culture.

Family Engagement

By providing crisis support, resource connections, college and financial aid support, I've helped families navigate challenging situations while building sustainable support systems that extend beyond the school environment.

Professional Collaboration

Through professional development, classroom support, and collaborative crisis intervention strategies, I've helped build staff capacity to address student mental health needs while creating a more comprehensive and coordinated approach to student wellness.
